Organised by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service – Singleton Volunteer Support Group as an annual fundraising event, the Hunter Valley Mining Charity Rugby League Knockout Competition has grown to become a premier charity rugby league competition held in the Hunter Valley.
The charity competition brings together over 350 coal mining employees from throughout the Hunter Valley and to represent their respective mine sites.
This year we were pleased to get involved and provide some funding for one of the teams – the Mount Thorley Warkworth Razorbacks – as their warmup shirt sponsor.
The event was held on Saturday, 7 October 2017 at Pirtek Park Singleton. Each team competed in a 10’s style competition throughout the day. Congratulations to the Ravensworth Rhinos, who won the competition and the Hunter Hawkettes who won the Women in Mining Series.
Since 2014 the Competition has raised over $135,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. From a humble beginning 40 years ago undertaking beach patrols on weekends, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service now operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year across northern New South Wales providing specialised aeromedical pilots and skilled crew, flight paramedics and doctors. Missions are diverse and include search and rescue, transporting critically ill or injured persons and the transfer of patients between hospitals for specialist care.
Every dollar raised is carefully used to make sure the Rescue Helicopter is always there when and where it is needed. No one assisted has to ever pay for the Service – which we think it a great thing!
